Douglas Herbert Waugh Bailey
Doug was born in Toronto on August 30, 1943 and was welcomed by his big brother Robert. When he was five, his baby sister Barbara completed the family.
He attended Oriole Park Public School and then on to North Toronto Collegiate, where he participated in football with mates who remain friends to this day. He also played trombone in both the school orchestra and concert bands.
Doug attended Carleton University obtaining a BA in General Arts, followed by Teachers College, and started teaching at Deer Park Elementary in Toronto in 1966. He met his first wife Donna at Teachers College. After a couple of years of teaching in Toronto, they moved to Midland where Doug took on the role of Vice Principal. Doug and Donna had three children---Janet, Barb and Stuart. Doug was blessed with three wonderful grandchildren--- Nora, Finn and Julia.
Doug was known for his wonderful bass voice which in later years enriched both Collier Church Choir and Barrie's KIng Edward Choir. In early years his superb soprano voice was sometimes present in professional situations such as Barbara Ann Scott's wedding.
Doug's career in Simcoe County was a busy and full one. He served as Ontario Public School Men's Federation President several times, negotiated collective agreements and was the first Teachers Credit Union President, to name a few. Provincially, Doug served on many Provincial Federation Committees, and sat on the College of Teachers of Ontario.
Doug retired as a Principal in 1998 after 32 years.
Doug married Joan in 1983, and after their retirement they travelled the world and wintered each year in Florida where Doug continued to participate in his favourite hobby, Sporting Clay Shooting. He was proud to serve on the Board of Directors of the Barrie Gun Club for over twenty years. Doug was happiest when shooting with his buddies or puttering around in the Club Workshop on a project.
Both Doug and Joan were involved for many years in retirement with the Retired Teachers here in Simcoe County, where they both served as Presidents.
Doug's health began to fail a few years ago and declined quickly this past summer. He passed away November 26, after a courageous battle.
During his life Doug touched many lives and will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of justice and his steadfast friendship.
He will be missed by his many friends and family.
Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Thursday, December 11, 2025 from 1 PM until the time we celebrate Doug's life in the Chapel at 2 PM. Guests are invited to remain for a reception luncheon in the lounge.
If desired, donations in Doug's memory may be made to the RVH Foundation or Salvation Army and are greatly appreciated by the family.
