Peacefully passed at the Amica Little Lake Retirement community in Barrie on Friday, July 12th, 2024 at the age of 95 years. Beloved husband of the late Margaret June (née Hook). Loving father of Lynda Downing (Trevor), Colleen New (Darrell) and Walter Leary (Jackie). Proud grandfather of Ryan Downing (Natalie), Jordan Downing, Sarah Preston (Robert), Matthew New (Amanda), Keelan Leary and great grandfather of Isla, Emersyn, Memphis and Talihina. Dear brother of Elizabeth Mathewson (the late Joseph), Dorothy Mathewson, the late Murray Leary (Audrey) and Clinton Leary (Irma). Also remembered by Diane and Tanya. Will be missed by extended family members and many dear friends.

Doug dedicated 38 years of his life to CN Rail, where he served faithfully as a Brakeman and Conductor until his retirement. Family was the center of Doug’s life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Whether it was offering a helping hand to those in need or creating lasting memories with his grandchildren, he found immense joy in their company. In his younger years, he lovingly tended to his grandchildren, keeping up with their boundless energy and bringing laughter wherever he went.

Beyond his work and family, Doug had a passion for the outdoors. He found solace in working on vehicles, pursuing the thrill of hunting, and the tranquility of fishing. His happiest moments were often spent at the cottage, surrounded by the beauty of nature that he held dear.

Doug's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024 from 10 am until the time of service in the chapel at 11 am. Guests are invited to remain for a reception following the service inside the lower lounge. A private interment will occur following the reception at the Barrie Union Cemetery, 338 Sunnidale Rd., Barrie. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice and are greatly appreciated by the family.
