LONG, Douglas
Douglas George Long, in his 86th year, died Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020 at the Trillium Manor in Orillia.
He leaves his brother Edward “Ted” Long and sister-in-law Mary of Barrie; his former wife Esther Long of Parry Sound, his son David Long of Parry Sound; his son Prof. Anthony Long and daughter-in-law Dr. Thanh-Van Nguyen of Newport Beach, CA; and his grandchildren Phillip and Audrey Long of Newport Beach, CA.
Born in Toronto, he was a lifelong resident of Barrie. Doug purchased Tony’s Appliance in the mid-1960s. he was well-known as its owner and proprietor for four decades. His son David and long-time employee, Terry Winteringham, took over the business in 1995 after he retired. He married Esther Long in 1957 and together raised David and Anthony in Barrie.
Doug was known for his love of animals. In retirement he had a small farm in Dalston with several cattle and extensive fencing he liked to construct. He enjoyed interacting with and watching the wildlife at his cottage in Restoule. He was devoted to his rescue dogs, who each enjoyed a new lease on life after their adoption by Doug.
A small, family graveside service will be held in the Spring at Barrie Union Cemetery, with arrangements entrusted to the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie.
