Unexpectedly passed away at her home in Barrie on Thursday, March 5th, 2026 at the age of 55 years. Beloved mother of Conor and Liam. Devoted daughter of Linda. Cherished sister of Jenn and John. Loving partner of Brent. Will be deeply missed by many extended family members and dear friends.

Liisa dedicated her entire professional life to scientific research with the Government of Canada, beginning as a co-op student at the age of 21. She later became a mentor to many co-op students herself. At Environment Canada, she worked as a research scientist and travelled the world studying climate change and pollution. She published 159 papers focusing on understanding the impacts of environmental contaminants on ecosystems and human health. Her work included pioneering research on microplastics pollution in the Arctic, as well as studies examining how widely used chemicals and materials, including plastics, affect both people and the environment. In addition, she taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, where she helped shape the next generation of scientists. She was deeply committed to using science to improve our understanding of the world around us.

Liisa had a passion for the outdoors and adventure, often referred to as her “Liisa Adventures.” She was an avid mountain biker who rode her favourite fat bike in the winter, switching to her other bikes in the spring, summer, and fall, embracing every opportunity to explore trails and nature. In recent years, Liisa truly embraced living life to the fullest, immersing herself in nature, enjoying live music, sharing good times and a few drinks along the way.

Liisa will be remembered for her curiosity, her dedication to protecting the environment, as well as the enthusiasm and a sense of community she brought to the things she loved.

In keeping with Liisa’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2026, with details to be shared on Facebook. Memorial donations may be made to My First Wheels (Bikes for Kids) or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada; they will be greatly appreciated by the family.
