EUNICE RUTH MCLEOD (NEE MCQUADE)
March 4, 1920 – May 8, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Eunice, who died peacefully in her sleep. Eunice was predeceased by her dear husband William. Devoted sister to Beatrice McQuade, adored mother of Katherine Tedford (Robert), William Jr. (Nancy) and John (Sybilla), grandmother to Jordy Tedford (Jackie), Matthew Tedford (Elizabeth), Jamie (Tracie), Cameron Tedford (Laura), Lindsay Craig (Andrew), Michael (Lindsay), Lauren Gilbert (Ryan), Brandon (Jaci O’Brien) and Alison Carreau (Jeremy) and great grandmother to George, Harry, Peter, Molly, Fletcher, John, Baya, Remi, Madeleine and Oliver. Eunice will also be greatly missed by her many dear friends. Eunice was born and raised in Barrie Ontario with her six sisters and two brothers. She met her husband William at Barrie High School and they shared a beautiful marriage lasting over 60 years. Family was a major part of Eunice’s life and she imparted her strong family bond in all her children and grandchildren. She instilled our strong work ethic, encouraged our higher education and ferried us to our countless sporting events. As family matriarch, Eunice organized gatherings and traced family roots back to pre-confederation. Each grandchild has special memories of their one-on-one Lake Simcoe vacations with Gramma. Starting at the Burton Avenue United Church, religion was an important part of Eunice’s life. She supported the church with her time and financially. The McQuade stained glass window still stands in the Burton Avenue Church in Barrie. Eunice certainly did not take the bible as gospel and over the years she challenged the church, its teachings and her beliefs. Eunice was an artist and her quilting skills were legendary. In 1991, she won Canada's most prestigious quilting award, Dorothy McMurdie Award, for her mastery of the art of quilting. One of her most outstanding works was the quilt based on Thor Hansen’s “Kitchikewana” depicting the creation of the 30,000 islands in Georgian Bay. Eunice was one of the founding members of Quilt Canada and designed their logo which is still in use today. She was a long-standing member of the Simcoe County Quilting Guild and Simcoe County Arts and Crafts. She taught her skill to countless students in many quilting bees over the years. She was a true Canadian and proudly waved Canada’s new maple leaf flag. Eunice leaves a great void in our family; we have lost the epicentre that held our strong family together. She will continue to live on in our hearts and memories. The family would like to thank the staff at the Waterford Retirement Home and the Bob Rumble Home for their care and compassion. Friends will be welcome on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 1 PM until the celebration of Eunice’s life at 2 PM in the Chapel at the STECKLEY-GOODERHAM FUNERAL HOME, 30 Worsley St, Barrie, Ontario with reception to follow. In remembrance and In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the RVH, Lake Simcoe Foundation or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
