Jiri “George” Jelen

March 16, 1942 - November 14, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jiri “George” Jelen after a brief battle with colon cancer. He died at home, surrounded by family and neighbours, at 81 years of age. He is survived by his sister Helena Bzonkova, and nephew Peter Bzonek. He is forever remembered by his grandniece Jessica, grandnephew Paul, and their mother Suzanne.

Born in Czechoslovakia in 1942, Jiri graduated as a mechanical engineer from Prague University. Under the ruse of a vacation, Jiri escaped the Soviet occupation of his homeland with his family, but with little else. He arrived in Toronto in 1969, initially working as a high school teacher but then as an automotive engineer. He was a proud and long standing member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. Jiri was a gifted “jack of all trades” and could fix or build anything. He was an avid photographer, swimmer and skier (both on water and snow). We all greatly miss his love, help and guidance, which he so freely provided.

Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Saturday, November 25th, 2023 from 1 pm until the time of Service in the Chapel at 2 pm. Reception to follow inside the Lower Lounge. In keeping with George’s wishes, cremation will follow. A private family interment will take place in the future at the Barrie Union Cemetery, 338 Sunnidale Rd., Barrie. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and are greatly appreciated by the family.

Special thanks to Dr. Cindy So and her wonderful home palliative care team in Newmarket.
