It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Patricia Weir, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. Joan Patricia Weir, 88, of Barrie, On, died suddenly after a protracted illness on September 16th, 2024.
She was born to Patricia Majorie Spanner (nee Bolton) and Ernest Roy Spanner in Toronto on February 4th 1936. Beloved wife of the late John Gordon Weir they married February 12th 1955 and became the mother of Wayne John Weir (Sylvia). Loving sister to Nora Jean Bifolchi, proud grandmother of Tara Susan Marchant (Ryan) and aunt to Christina Bifolchi (Randy Flynn) and Darren Bifolchi (Minette Tagle). She will be missed by her great-nieces and nephews (Damien, Chelsea and Katie) and dear friends.
Joan’s career with National Grocers started in Sudbury where she began working as a cashier in a local grocery store. She progressed to Head Cashier, Book keeper and eventually became the Coordinator of Front-End Training where she travelled around Ontario and helped owners get their new store open by training the front-end staff. In 1967 Joan was recognized as the Cashier of the Year for the Sudbury Region and won a trip to Expo ’67 where she took 2nd place in the competition for Top Cashier in Canada.
Joan loved to bake and her chocolate truffles as well as her Christmas cookies and squares were an eagerly awaited treat for her family and friends. Katie will now carry on that family tradition! She also enjoyed reading biographies, making crafts and was an avid supporter of the Royal Family. She and Nora watched many British sitcoms and dramas together over the years. She treasured spending time at the family cottage on Lake Muskoka until her health prevented her visits and she loved nature and all animals. Joan volunteered at the Grove Park Long Term Care for twelve years and was a friendly face to welcome all who used the Café services.
Private family arrangements have been entrusted to the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie. In keeping with Joan’s wishes cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred at the York Cemetery in Toronto where will be with her husband John.
In lieu of flowers donations in Joan's memory may be made to Canadian Heart and Stoke Society and are greatly appreciated by the family.
