de Jong, Johannes Marinus
Passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 surrounded by his family. Born in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, on June 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Hendrik de Jong and Klazina Anna Zuurmond. Loving and gentle husband to Hillie de Jong (Voogd), his wife of 52 years. Devoted father to Karen de Jong-Dermann (Keith), Margaret Chapman (Robert) and Michele Kumara (Ranil). Proud Opa to Emilea Chapman. He leaves behind his four loving siblings in the Netherlands, Rochus, Heleen, Henk and Arend, and is predeceased by his sister, Siena. Brother-in-law to Jaap (deceased), Ite, Jannie, Nel, Greeth, Albert, Peter and Menno. A caring, thoughtful and loyal man, he found much strength in his faith. He was an avid reader, always up to date on political events in both Canada and the Netherlands, and loved nothing more than an intelligent debate. “Required reading” he liked to say to his girls. He gave back to his community through the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Blood Services and many hours volunteering at his church. John and Hillie successfully operated de Jong Heating Services together for over 50 years. The family wishes to extend thanks to his many caregivers and special thanks to Dr. John Beecroft. Visitation will be held at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 2-4 pm. Funeral Service at Collier St. United Church, 112 Collier St., Barrie, on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 1 pm, followed by a reception at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home. Interment to follow in the spring. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Collier St. United Church or the ALS Society. Condolences can be forwarded to www.steckleygooderham.com.
