John “Dougall” McLean
February 25, 1922 - February 16, 2018

Dougall passed away peacefully at the Veterans Centre, Sunnybrook Hospital after a short period of declining health.

Born in Saint John NB to Senator A. Neil and Margaret May (Dougall) McLean, Dougall attended Upper Canada College in Toronto and later served in the Royal Canadian Navy, participating in various missions in the North Sea during WWII aboard the destroyer HMCS Sioux. In 1988, he was awarded the USSR Commemorative Medal for his role in these missions.

After a brief career with Connors Bros. in Black’s Harbour, NB and Corner Brook, NFLD, Dougall moved to Ontario where he worked for the Ministry of Transportation and eventually settled in Barrie.

He leaves behind his children Margaret (David) Attis, Grand Barachois, NB, Dougall (Wanda) McLean, Pennfield, NB, and step-daughters Diana (David) Holmes, Dundas ON, Jane (Ab) Manschot, Dordrecht, Netherlands and Rhona (Richard) DesRoches, Penetanguishene ON, along with several grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Beloved husband of the late Ruth (Edwards), he was also predeceased by his adoring sisters Frances, Margaret and Sandra, his son Neil McLean and grandson Jesse McLean.

Dougall will be best remembered for his sense of style, his love of cooking and his ability to regale friends and family with many amusing stories and jokes.

At Dougall’s request, there will be no funeral service. A private family internment will take place later this year in Barrie ON.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of LGSW at Sunnybrook and the companions from Premier Homecare Services for the care, support and friendship they provided Dougall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dougall’s memory to the Sunnybrook Veterans’ Grant a Wish program at donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute or 416-480-4483.
