Joseph Edward Smith

October 24-1927 – June 1-2009

Retired Metropolitan Toronto Police Force Badge # 1465

It is with much sadness the family announces the passing of Joseph Edward Smith on June -01-2009 in his 82nd year. Loving & devoted husband of Carroll Maria, proud father of Susan (Anthony) Caledon, Harold (Gillian) Brampton & Robert (Rossana) Downsview. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Catherine (Calgary), Graeme (Brampton) and Chiara & Alyssa (Downsview). Deeply missed by his sisters, Alice Hendsbee, Smithville, Nova Scotia, & Rachel Bernard, Newmarket, Ontario, as well as sister-in-laws Madeleine, New Liskeard, Mavis, Vancouver, numerous nieces and nephews and his four legged friend Smokey.

Joseph is predeceased by his parents Edward Bendel Smith & Jane Johnson, Smithville, Nova Scotia, and brothers Harold, Berwick, Nova Scotia, Maxwell (Mavis), Vancouver, British Columbia, Harvey, Stellerton Nova Scotia, and Dick (Madelaine), New Liskeard Ontario.

Joseph was born in the small rural farming community of Smithville on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He left home as a teenager to work in Halifax, later sailing the Great Lakes on the S.S. Gleneagles. In 1953 he joined the Township of York Police Force, which later amalgamated to become a part of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force. Joseph retired in 1982. His retirement years were spent at his home in Barrie. Many a day was spent touring the highways of Ontario, and at his daughter’s cottage on Galla Lake.

Joseph’s battle with cancer was well fought for many years, but the past few months have been difficult. Thank-you to the team of healthcare providers that gave him and his family, hope & courage, as well as Doctor Peter Dalziel, Doctor Parbtani, and to the Palliative Care team in 3NB at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, Ontario, that let him pass in peace & dignity.

The family will receive relatives & friends on Monday June 8-2009 10:00 a.m. at Steckley-Gooderham Inc. 30 Worsley St., Barrie, Ontario. A Memorial service to follow at 11:00a.m. Interment at the Boston Mills Cemetery, Caledon, Ontario at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the CNIB or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

''You remain with us in spirit in this life until we meet again.''
Godspeed – Safe Journey

Condolences
