Karl Mader could be defined by what he was on the outside – “father”, “grandfather”, “feeder of ducks and squirrels” – but those who are experiencing the loss of his light from their lives are sure to remember him by a different list.  Among these are: loving, funny, fair, kind, and above all adventurous.

Karl never stopped asking questions.  Over his 89 years of life, he always inquired as to how you are doing, how the world worked, or the details of the ‘small machine’ you were always showing him while at his home.  He meant ‘cell phone’, of course, but he would never refer to it as that.  It wasn’t a gap in knowledge, rather something to make us laugh.  At all points in his life, he was the type to want to see as many new things as he could, and the kind of person who longed for adventure.  To go for a drive to somewhere new and regale you with stories of his latest trip.

He instilled a longing for adventure within his daughter Julie, grandchildren Emily and Erik, son Steve and Steve’s wife Jeannette, as well as her two children Ashah and Drake.  That’s not even to mention everyone else: friends, family, acquaintances, who not only experienced his love for life, but will feel his loss too.  Karl will be missed by many around Canada and back in his native home of Germany.  Over the last four years he has dearly missed his wife Betty, and though we are certain he’s sad to leave us, we’re sure he’s looking forward to finally bringing mom her slippers.  From all of us to you, Karl – thank you.  We will love you endlessly.  Karl, Dad, Granddad.

If desired, donations in Karl's memory may be made to CNIB Foundation or the Barrie SPCA / Humane Society and are greatly appreciated by the family.
