Smet: Lawrence Joseph “Lorne” ( also known as Lorry or Smitty)
Passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday October 6, 2010 in his 79th year. Beloved husband of Jacqueline (nee Porter) for over 45 years. Loving father of Henry, and Lawrence and his wife Julia. Proud and cherished grandpa of Blaine, Talina, and Priyana, and great grandfather of Morgan and Chaos. Born in Winnipeg to Odile “Mimi” Bertrand in 1931, Lorne was adopted by Henri and Caroline Smet at a young age. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by both the Bertrand and Smet families. At the age of 12, he joined the Cameron Highlanders of Canada, and at 19 joined the First Canadian Highland Battalion, 27th Brigade Pipes and Drums as a drummer. Lorne later became a member of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps (RCOC). After 34 years of service across Canada and Germany, he retired as Depot Chief Warrant Officer at CFAD Angus. Following his retirement from the military, Lorne continued to work at the Depot for 10 years as a civilian specialist. He was an active participant in Gilwell Scouting in Quebec, Manitoba, Ontario, Germany and England. Lorne was a Member of the Knights of Columbus, a devout parishioner, and devoted volunteer with St. Mary’s Church. Throughout his entire life, Lorne was known for his wonderful sense of humour, always keeping a smile on peoples’ faces. Friends and family may gather at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 65 Amelia St., on Tuesday October 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Cremation to follow. If desired donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
