Leighton Paul Emms

Passed away peacefully at Georgian Bay Hospital in Midland on Thursday January 20th, 2022 at the age of 90. Son of Hap and Mable Emms.  Beloved husband of the late Suzanne for 66 years. Loving father of Barbara, Gordon (Brenda), and Sandra (Les) Campbell. Proud grandfather of Autumn Marchment, Leighton Bucht, Leah Griffith, Lauren Griffith, and great grandfather to Willow, Chase, Harlome, and Morgan.

Paul lived his life his way.  He loved playing music first and foremost. In the late 50's he had a band called, "Paul Emms and the Green Valley boys", playing every Saturday night on CKBB radio station in Barrie. His band was even supposed to open for Patsy Cline in Toronto. Paul played baseball and was a good pitcher, however playing hockey for his father took precedent. He was a member of the Memorial cup winning team (Barrie Flyers 50-51), also fought Jean Beliveau (didn't win), and coached the Niagara Falls Flyers to the Memorial cup Championship (67-68). He was one of very few to win the Memorial Cup as both player and coach. He also coached the St. Catherines Black Hawks to the Memorial Cup in 1974 but lost in the finals. His animated coaching style often got him in hot water with the Ontario Attorney General in the 70's. Hockey gave the family the opportunity to enjoy summers at the cottage where Paul loved to water ski and spend time on the boat with friends.

Once they left Hockey, Paul returned to music. Both Paul and Sue went on the road traveling with a band all across Canada in the 80's as “Paul Webber & Tophand”.  They even played at the Juno's four times. He loved every minute of this experience and developed his steel guitar skills. They spent their retirement years in Cottage country or wintering in Texas making new friends. Paul played at many music jams throughout the years in the surrounding areas. No doubt he's playing music as we speak.

In keeping with Paul's wishes, cremation has taken place. If desired, donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the OSPCA.
