Gariepy: Lorraine
With abundant memories and great sadness, her family announce the peaceful passing of Lorraine Gariepy at Hospice Simcoe on Jan. 12, 2011 surrounded by love. Born Lorraine Theresa Heffron, only daughter of Gertrude and Russell John on May 10, 1926 in Barrie, Ontario. A registered nurse and graduate of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto she returned from training to meet her beloved hockey player, Raymond Gariepy, her cherished husband for over 60 years. They were married in St. Mary's Church where their vows were blessed last summer and she was a life-long member, ever devoted to her faith. Her greatest pride was her family. She will be forever missed and loved by her ten children and their families: Stephen (Lyn) and their children Megan and Mikael (Diane); Gregory (Marna); Michelle Kranjc (John) and their son Mark; Denise Gariepy and her sons Phillip (Lindsay) and Nathan (Alex); Christopher (Debra) and their children Ryan and Gillian; Lisa Roblin (Gerry); Marc (Anné) and their sons Luke, Pierre John and Anders; Tara Gariepy and her children Christian (Amanda), Nicholas, Whitney (Nick), Cameron and Patrick Basnett; Matthew (Susan) and their children Kristin and Alec; and Antony (Maureen) and their children Alicia Delage (Martin) and Serena McGovern. Also blessed with 6 great-grandchildren. Lorraine is survived by her brother-in-law Marty McAlendin and his daughters Marlee Franz and Melanie Werstine and their families. Although she struggled with her health, Mother rarely complained and was a beacon of hope for us all. She handled her challenges with dignity, strength and courage, Ray always by her side. We will remember her passion for history, ancestry, politics and travel while missing her wonderful sense of humour and zest for life. Our matriarch taught us all kindness, humility, compassion and forgiveness. Her love and legacy will live with us forever. Friends may call at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 201 Minet's Point Road, Barrie, on Friday, January 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 65 Amelia Street, Barrie on Saturday, January 15 at 10:00 a.m. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family wish to extend their gratitude to all who cared for her along her journey and request that as expressions of sympathy, in memory of her generous heart, memorial donations be made to Birthright, RVH Foundation, or Hospice Simcoe in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.steckleygooderham.com.
