Dr. Marie Louise Murphy (nee Baragar)
World War II Veteran
Captain – Royal Canadian Medical Corps
1920 to 2010
Dr. Marie Louise Murphy (nee Baragar) (BSc, MDCM – Masters of Pediatric Surgery, BEd) passed peacefully at Hospice Simcoe, Barrie on April 20, 2010 after a recent reoccurrence of cancer. Marie was a wife of 60 years to Francis John Murphy (deceased 2007), daughter to Blanche Eugenie Ledoux (deceased 1930) and Charles Arthur Baragar (deceased 1936), mother to four daughters – Martha Marie Clarke (Jean-Pierre Tremblay), RitaSue Bolton (Curt), Raven-Leigh Winwood, and Irene Allison Wright (John), grandmother to seven grandchildren – Andrew Clarke, Diane Clarke (Kirk Bugler), Sarah Clarke, Christine Clarke, Tim Bolton (Misty), Caela Bolton and Nina Winwood, and many courtesy children and grandchildren, sister to Charles David Bruce (deceased 1987) and William Robert Arthur (Bob) Baragar (Dorothy) as well as many courtesy brothers and sisters at the Roberta Place Retirement Lodge where throughout the past two years she lived and actively participated in many of its social activities. Marie’s curiosity about life and love of learning was passed on to her immediate and extended families, her students and whomever was drawn to her, whether in her personal life or in one of her many careers of medical doctor, social worker, school teacher / librarian / attendance counselor. She was known as a caring parent and grandparent, and a compassionate friend to people of all ages. Marie was a “people person” whose interactions with others revealed her wonderful sense of humor and boundless energy. Her commitment to being physically and mentally active, even in her 90th year, was about being a life long learner, reader, gardener, walker, birder, puppeteer, and storyteller.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of the Roberta Place Retirement Lodge, the staff in the Emergency and 3NorthB wards of the Royal Victoria Hospital, and the staff and volunteers of Hospice Simcoe for the care of this very special and beloved woman. Arrangements entrusted to St. Mary’s Church. Visitation is on Thursday, April 22, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the STECKLEY-GOODERHAM Funeral Homes (30 Worsley Street, Barrie). A mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, April 23, at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church (65 Amelia Street, Barrie). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association – Simcoe County Branch, Covenant House – Toronto, or Hospice Simcoe. Messages of condolence for the family may be forwarded through www.steckleygooderham.com.
Marie’s loving nature and beautiful smile will be deeply missed, but will remain in our hearts forever.
