Mary Bernadette Murdock passed away peacefully in her sleep at Victoria Village Long Term Care Centre, Barrie on Sunday, May 19 at the age of 103. “Bernie” was born in Port Hood, Cape Breton in 1909, the daughter of the late Alex and Jessie McEachern and the sister of Loretta, Joe, Hughena, Margaret, John, Donald, Monica, Harry, and Christina. She is predeceased by her husband, Maurice Murdock, D.O., and son Michael. She leaves behind her children John Murdock (Madonna), Monica Penno (Adolf), Peter Murdock (Brenda Keyser), Korleen Smith (Leighton) and Katy Austin, as well as 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Bernie was a retired teacher, an active member in St. Mary’s church and school communities, a long-time volunteer for the Liberal Party in Barrie, and a well-respected bridge player.
Visitation will be between 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, May 24 at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie. The Funeral Mass will be said at St. Mary’s Church, 65 Amelia St., Barrie, on Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m., followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Women and Children’s Centre of Barrie or to St. Mary’s Church, Barrie, would be greatly appreciated.
