Born on April 21, 1928, passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 11, 2026, at the age of 97, in Barrie, Ont. Beloved wife of the late Walter (2025), to whom she was married for 75 years. She is survived by her children: Carol (Wes Smith), Sharon (John Saikaley), David (Nicole Carvell) and Margy. Predeceased by her son, William “Bill” (Sheila Hotchkiss), brother-in-law, Jerry Danic (Jane Weir), and great-grandson, Nathan Chaggares. Proud grandmother of 20: Alexis Desjardin (Julian), Benjamin Danic (Amanda Markou), Jennifer Chaggares (Robert), Steven Smith (Peter Swerdzewski), Jaemi Rost (Ishi), Drew Smith (Amber Merrril), Michael Smith, Adam Saikaley (Bianca Rodgers), Stephanie Saikaley, Pamela Saikaley (Julian Ioannou), Karina Danic, Lauren Dabros (Ryan), Mariah St.Amour (Scott), Erin Dabros (Shane), Jared Danic, Emma Danic, Brianna Danic, Alaina Hunter (Jordan), Michelle Manley, Julia Manley; and great-grandmother of 27- Jackson, Skye, Lakela, Nathan, Natalie, Noah, Jaryn, Jonathan, Jonah, Aezlin, Brenan, Grace, Sydney, Lyla, Bennet, Arlo, Mason, Liana, Azalea, Jack, Mila, Lana, Alexa, Quinn, Brooke, Abby, and Maggie.
Mary was the most wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to sing and encouraged her children to study music in various forms. Mary also enjoyed sewing clothing for herself and her children. After the family moved from Cornwall to Niagara Falls in 1972, Mary worked at various secretarial positions, most enjoying her work as a clerk in the hospital. After relocating to Barrie, Mary served with her husband Walter in the Toronto temple for many years, and also served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Walter in Slovakia. More than anything Mary loved being with her family. She always inspired us to do our best.
A celebration of life will be held in May (details to come). Mary will be laid to rest with her husband at the Barrie Union Cemetery.
