Norman MacLean

November 24, 1937 - September 23, 2024

Norman Walter MacLean (Norm), age 86, born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, grew up in small towns throughout northern Ontario with his parents Samuel and Elsie MacLean (Ballard). He left the north at the age of 13 to attend Upper Canada College in Toronto. After graduating from UCC, Norm attended law school at the University of Western Ontario before settling in Kitchener-Waterloo and attending Waterloo College where he subsequently obtained his degree in Education. While in Kitchener-Waterloo he met the love of his life, Maureen MacLean (Doepel). Norman was predeceased by Maureen who passed in 2012. After battling cancer, Norm passed away peacefully, on September 23, 2024 at Hospice Simcoe surrounded by his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Bonnie and Dave and Sara.

Prior to residing in Barrie, Ontario, Norm worked as an educator for 34 years, retiring in 1994. He began his career at Pickering College in Newmarket and then moved to Brantford, Ontario where he worked at Brantford Collegiate Institute and North Park Collegiate as a math and science teacher and eventually a guidance counselor and served as the Head of Guidance at North Park Collegiate for many years. Norm was very well-respected in his role and made a significant impact on many of the lives he touched within his career and beyond.

Norm married Maureen in 1961 and they had an incredible, love-filled life with each other. They experienced great times and enjoyed raising their family and cruising throughout the World hand in hand. Together they welcomed two children, Stephen (1963) and David (1965). Norm’s pride and joy were his two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve (Bonnie) and Dave (Sara), as well as his grandchildren: Alex (Taylor), Jake (Emily), Ian, Jenny (Pat), Neil (Emmalyn) and Kirsten (Billy) and his great grandchildren: Madelyn, Lawson and Laine. He was a kind, loving soul who put all others ahead of himself and he will be incredibly missed by all.

Private family arrangements have been entrusted to the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or Hospice Simcoe.
