We are sad to announce the passing of Richard Coleman Jones, in his 74th year, on Saturday, January 4th, 2025. Rick courageously battled an aggressive cancer for six years, which was much longer than his initial prognosis. In his final hours, Rick was comforted by his wife of 48 years, Cheryl, and his daughters, Kate and Caroline, who were at home by his side.  Rick was gracious to all who helped him through his journey and maintained a positive attitude until the day of his passing.

The son of Jean and Dick Jones, Rick grew up with his beloved sister Donna in Oakville, Ontario. The Jones family summered at Presqu’ile Point where they were surrounded by generations of family and lifelong friends. Rick earned a degree in Urban Planning from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from York University. He moved to Barrie, where he became the City Planner and met the love of his life, Cheryl. Together in Barrie, they raised their two daughters and their many dogs. Following his career with the City, Rick founded the Jones Consulting Group. Rick was passionate about community and politics. His commitment to his community was exemplified in 2008 by his nomination as the federal Liberal candidate for the Barrie riding. As an avid volunteer, Rick donated his energy to numerous charities, including Habitat for Humanity, Out of the Cold, and many more. A new chapter of Rick and Cheryl’s lives opened in 2015 when they moved to the Beaches, in Toronto, and his goal of working for the Ontario Municipal Board was realized. Over the last 25 years, Rick fulfilled his dream of building an environmentally sustainable cottage on Georgian Bay, where he became an integral member of the Manitou community.

A pillar of strength, Rick’s family and colleagues often turned to him for insight and advice.  Throughout his years, Rick treasured his moments with Cheryl, his daughters, and his grandchildren, Max, Gavin and Jason, and their dad, Stephen. He could always be counted on to play a game of Risk with his extended family or Euchre with his friends. His most peaceful moments came while admiring the sunrise over the water in his red Muskoka chair or from his home in the Beaches, scotch in hand. He will be remembered for his trustworthiness, love of animals, witty sense of humour and boisterous laugh. Although he will be missed by many, his legacy will be carried on by his daughters and his grandsons.

Visitation will be held at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Sunday, January 26th, 2025 from 1 pm until the time of Service inside the Chapel at 2 pm. Guests are invited to remain for a reception inside the lower lounge following the service. If you would like to honour Rick, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of his favourite charities.
