Rose Florence Carter (née Hancock) was born in Botwood, Newfoundland on January 18, 1931 into a blended family of nine brothers and sisters. Two brothers followed, Fred and Retis, before her mother, Annie Hancock (née Seabright), passed away. She began working at her father Thomas Hancock’s store as a teenager which is where she met her future husband, Michael Carter. After the sudden death of her father and one of her half-brothers, she married and had three children. They boarded a train to Ontario on the promise of work with the CNR and landed in Barrie in 1951.

It wasn’t very long before Rosie started work as a waitress at Bradley’s Restaurant. She worked various jobs her whole life, but the weekends were always about her family and spending time at Wasaga Beach and Springwater Park. In 1963, Rosie and Mike decided to add one more child to their family and young Michael was born. She always wanted to be a nurse and enjoyed her job as a nurse’s assistant until the home closed. She began at Radio Shack and worked there for 20+ years, retiring from that job to her favourite job of all, being a full-time grandma.

Everyone enjoyed going to grandma’s house. Rosie loved feeding everyone at family gatherings with extra tables in the kitchen and living room. Love, laughter, and Papa singing Newfie music and all the favourite food on the tables.

She moved to Serenity Retirement Residence in Barrie in 2021 and was loved and cared for by the wonderful staff for the last three years. She passed with family by her side after a brief stay at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on November 6, 2024.

Rose is survived by her brother Retis and Shirley Hancock and their family in Newfoundland, her late sister Dorothy Dolorme’s family in Montreal, and her sister-in-law Pat Romkey and family. Also survived by her son Bob (Mary) and family, her daughter Linda (Don) and family, her son Dennis (Rose) and family, and her son Michael (Angie) and family. She was a loving grandma to 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Special thanks to her PSW Karen Konesch who cared for her in her home and continued to visit her at Serenity as her home. Special thanks to Donna and Bill and all the staff that treated her as their Rosie and Loved her dearly.

Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024 at 10 am until the time we Celebrate Rosie’s life in the Chapel at 11 am. A reception will take place following the service for family, friends and community to gather, support one another, and reflect on a life well lived. In keeping with Rosie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place in the future. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army and are greatly appreciated by the family. Online memories and condolences may be shared via www.steckleygooderham.com

"I know how much you love me

As much as I love you

And each time that you think of me

I know you’ll miss me too.

So when tomorrow starts without me

Don’t think we’re far apart

For every time you think of me

I’m right here in your heart"
