Surrounded by her family on Monday, February 20th, 2023 in her 94th year, Ruth passed away peacefully, joining her sisters Mary and Jean. Loving wife of the late Allenby (2017); mother of Jane (Chris Brokenshire), Barbara (Don Rooke), and Briar; stepmother to the late Kingdon (Joan); grandmother to Carly, Sammy, Grace, Clayton, Linden, Cali, Alex and Bryan.
After completing nurse’s training at Toronto Western Hospital in 1951, Ruth left the family farm in Woodbridge to travel across the continent to California, with the intention of finding a nursing job for six months. Eight years and many adventures later, she returned to Ontario to nurse her ailing mother back to health. Her intrepid and caring spirit inspired her children and grandchildren to follow her lead.
As a young woman Ruth sang professionally in “The Harmonettes” and continued in amateur productions and church choirs throughout her life. She dedicated herself to her family and channeled her intelligence into many volunteer pursuits. She was an accomplished curler, a seasoned traveler and an okay golfer. Genuine and spirited, Ruth knew how to tell a story and delighted people with them right until the end.
We are grateful to the Robinsons for being our second family and to Bonnie and Julie for helping us through Mom’s last days. Thanks also to Chris for bringing light and positivity and to Dr. Bédard for his care and commitment.
Our lovely Ruth was cherished by her family. Her grace, thoughtfulness and charm will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
A visitation, funeral service and reception will take place at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd., Etobicoke. On Friday March 3, 2023, family will be on hand for those who wish to visit from 12-2 pm. A funeral service will be held the following day, Saturday March 4th, 2023, from 3-4 pm, followed by a reception from 4-5 pm.
