Weiland, Verlin Eugene (Vern)
Retired RCASC Chief Warrant Officer

“NIL SINE LABORE”

Vern passed away very suddenly on Friday April 6th, 2012 at the RVH in Barrie with his family beside him at the age of 78. Vern was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on June 18, 1933, the first born son of John and Olga Weiland. Vern was raised in Alberta until the age of 17, attending schools in Black Diamond, Wetaskiwin and Calgary. He joined the Canadian Army on January 14, 1952 and later the same year was deployed and served in the Korean War. Vern spent 28 years in the Canadian Forces, serving in locations such as Lahr, Germany; London, England; Gagetown, New Brunswick and CFB Borden in Ontario. While serving in Base Borden Vern met and married Marg Ellis of Utopia in 1959 – they lovingly celebrated 53 wedding anniversaries. He was a loving father to Steve (Lisa), Sandra and Susan (Don) and had five cherished grandchildren, Danielle, Samantha, Courtney, Mitchell and Taylor. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Tautfest and brother John (Heather) both of Calgary. Vern retired from the military in 1979 and bought a home in Angus (as close as possible to his beloved Circled Pine Golf Club). He spent the next 15 years working at the Ammunition Depot in Angus and retired from this career in 1995. He cherished the friendships made over the years at Circled Pine Golf Club and the golfing winters in Florida. The loss of his sharp sense of humour is going to leave a very large void in our lives. Friends may call on the family, Friday April 13th from 6-9 pm at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home 30 Worsley St., Barrie. A service celebrating Vern’s life will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday April 14th at 11:00 am. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Society of Canada or charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.steckleygooderham.com
