Watson, Wallace Richard (Wally) – peacefully at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie on December 27, 2014 at age 90. A WWII D-Day veteran who fought for freedom with the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SD&G) Highlanders out of Cornwall, On. Wally took great pride for his contribution in the liberation of Holland and Victory Europe. He was recognized for heroism by the Government of Belgium for saving a family under enemy attack.
Wally was a 42 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 147 and a 25 year member of the Barrie Unit 365 Army Navy & Air Force Veterans of Canada. A true patriot who loved our country, he attended many parades and events in support of and out of respect for fellow and fallen soldiers.
Wally, and his late wife Esther (nee Liddle), were married 64 years. He leaves behind two beloved daughters, Katherine Campbell and Karen Dixon. He was a loving grandfather to Andrew and Carrie Dixon, and step grandfather to Ryan and Michael Campbell along with their wives and children. He will be sadly missed by Paul Dixon, surviving siblings, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
Wally was a humble hero who greeted every day with passion and enthusiasm. His big personality made people smile. He was engaging, charismatic, funny, and would help anyone in need.
Friends and family may call at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow. As a display of Wally’s love of Canada and for our troops, please wear something red.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Simcoe County would be gratefully appreciated.
Throughout his life Wally had an angel on his shoulder on many occasions. Now he is amongst them. God bless you Wally, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle and friend…until we meet again.
