With profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of Winnifred (Hurley) Vieira, in her 90th year, in Toronto, on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Cherished wife of the late Cyril. K.G. Vieira for 50 years. Predeceased by her 3 brothers, Alex, Bert and John Hurley, and sisters Mary, Alice, Agnes and Rose, all of Scotland and Elizabeth, Hanna and Margaret of Barrie. Devoted mother of John (wife Sharrol), Heather, Christopher and Mark of Barrie, Robert ( wife Karen) of Oro Station, Catherine, Marie, and Patricia of Toronto. Loving grandmother to John jr., Benjamin, Kimberley, Stephen, Jason, Jeremiah, Nicholas, Tamarah, Mark jr. and Jessica. Beloved great-grandmother to Brendon, Mathew, Nicholas, Hannah, Jacob, Jesse, Dexter, Nathan, and Mae. Winnifred was born in Burnbank, Hamilton, Scotland on September 3, 1923, the youngest child of John (Jack) Hurley (Waterford, Ireland) and Rose Ann McAuley (Burnbank, Hamilton, Scotland).
Winnifred arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax, N.S. Canada, in 1946, a war bride, and made her way to Antigua, West Indies with her husband, to start her married life. They left the Caribbean in 1951 and moved to Barrie, Ontario, which was their home until dad's retirement in the 70's. They shared their retirement years between Antigua in the winter and Toronto in the summer. We will miss her humour, intelligence, wisdom, and her unconditional love and support of her family. We are grateful to have had such a special person in our lives, and we will continue to honour her life by keeping her memory within us. She was our role model, teacher and friend and inspired us with her great strength and courage. May God bless her richly.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the War Amps of Canada would be appreciated. Family and friends will be received at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Homes, 30 Worsley St.,Barrie, on Tuesday May 14th from 6 pm. to 9 pm. (parish prayers at 8:45 pm). A mass of christian burial will be held on Wednesday May 15th at St Mary's Catholic Church, 65 Amelia St., Barrie. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Barrie.
